Vice-President
- The second highest office in the country and modelled on the lines of the American Vice-President.
- Elected through indirect election, elected by the elected and nominated members of both the Houses of Parliament.
Qualifications
- For competing vice-president election one should have the following qualifications…
- Citizen of India.
- 35 years of age (completed).
- Qualified to be a member of the Lok Sabha.
Note : The oath and affirmations of office to the Vice - President is administered by the President of India or by the person appointed by him.
- The Vice-President holds office for a term of five years.
- Gives his resignation letter to the President.
- No formal impeachment is required for his removal but can be removed by a resolution passed by a majority of all the then members of the Rajya Sabha (effective majority) and in the Lok Sabha by a simple majority.
- Removal resolution can be introduced only in the Rajya Sabha and not in the Lok Sabha. 14 days’ advance notice should be given.
When the Vice - President’s office will be Vacant?
- Completion of five years tenure.
- By his resignation.
- By impeachment.
- By his death.
- When disqualified by the Supreme court.
Powers and Functions
- He acts as the ex-officio Chairman of Rajya Sabha
- He acts as President when a vacancy occurs in the office of the president.
